“This is precisely the time when artists go to work. There is no time for despair, no place for self-pity, no need for silence, no room for fear.”

Toni Morrison

Greetings Matchbox Enthusiasts,

Welcome to the beginning of our 15th year. We would like to take the time to acknowledge the events of this tumultuous year.

Our organization and staff members denounce the historical and current racist ideology that saturates our culture. The murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black people are abominable crimes and we are working to fight against systemic anti-Black racism and oppression both individually and as an organization. We actively recognize that the Covid-19 pandemic has exacerbated racist attitudes and actions in this country and has disproportionately impacted Black communities and communities of color. Racism and the systems that perpetuate it, such as the prison industrial complex and the police, must be abolished. As @skoltchev_art said on their mural on UCSC’s painted barrels: “racism is a pandemic too.”

Our organization and our staff members support the Black Lives Matter movement and commit to providing an anti-racist, safe and inclusive space for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC). We see ourselves as an additional resource for underrepresented people to make their voices heard across the UC system. We will publicize and make accessible the art, culture, imaginations and voices of BIPOC and underrepresented communities. Due to the current limitations resulting from Covid-19, our 15th edition will be published online. Our staff acknowledges that access to online spaces is limited and will accordingly try to make print copies available this year.

We ask our audience to return to this blog as a safe space in the form of an online platform to engage with ideas, book recommendations, multiple modes of artwork, and more. We are working towards making it possible for our audience members to publish work to our blog. Please let us know if you have any suggestions for what you would like to see from us. We can be reached by email at matchboxmagazine@gmail.com
