Many of you are probably wondering, what goes into making a literary magazine? What are all the components? Where did we start, and where are we now in the process? The Matchbox staff thought we’d give you the inside scoop on what it takes to make a UC-wide literary magazine, and talk about our journey thus far of the 2016-2017 year.
In Fall Quarter (September 2016) the returning members of Matchbox got together and opened our doors, so to speak, for new members to join. Once we had our initial meeting, we had to get started fast on outreach. We teamed up in groups, and set off in order to make the other UC’s aware of our presence and to get funded. As a non-profit organization, we rely entirely on donations and funding, so an extremely important part of our group effort goes into getting money in order to print our magazine. The other half of our outreach is also very important as well: reaching out to the other UC’s. Because we are the only UC-wide literary magazine, we put a lot of emphasis on contacting the other schools, whether it be through email, phone calls, telling friends, or reaching out through the media. We make sure we do it all. As we moved through Fall quarter, focusing on outreach and funding, we opened up our submissions, and hoped they would come flooding through. Though it seems like we wouldn’t need to, we would meet once weekly in order to become more of a family, because it’s important that we work as a team and get to know each other. Working together is best when you know each other well, and we prize ourself on our community.
As the submissions started rolling through, we striped the name and school that the submission came from, so that when we sit down and go through them, the author will remain anonymous so we can maintain a non-bias atmosphere. This is a wonderful time during our process because our hard work pays off. Of course we didn’t stop reaching out to students on campus and students on other UC campuses until the last day possible.
As we moved into Winter Quarter, our submissions and funding came through, and we started going through submissions!! This was an exciting moment for us, because we were able begin to imagine what this year’s magazine is going to look like. And now that the Winter quarter is coming to an end, we are getting closer to the end of our submissions. We aren’t there yet, it will require a two meetings a week, some weekend meetings, and some friendly quarrels over what will be in the final copy of the book.
In the months to come, we will send out our agreement letters to those submissions chosen for the 11th edition. We will start to figure out the layout, make the final decisions, and the magazine will come together.
But for right now, we’re pushing through, and pushing strong. We apologize for the wait, but we appreciate your patience, whether you are waiting to know if you were accepted, or if you are just waiting for our 11th edition to come out. It takes a lot of people, time, and work to put together this magazine. But we do this because we love it, and we are so glad to create a book that encapsulates the variety of thought and expression through art from all the UC’s. We look forward to updating you as the year progresses. Know that we are just as excited as you are!
